Artifice
Before you sit down

Questions and answers.

What Artifice does, how the Dungeon Master handles the rules, and what happens to your campaign between sessions. Still stuck? Making an account and playing a session answers most of it faster than we can.

Playing
What is Artifice?

Artifice is a browser tabletop RPG with an AI Dungeon Master. You choose a campaign, create a character, and play through a world that adapts around the decisions your table makes. The Dungeon Master narrates, the rules engine handles the mechanics, and the story is yours to craft.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Artifice runs entirely in the browser — there is no client to download, no launcher, and nothing to keep updated. If you can open a link, you can sit down at the table.

Can I play with my friends?

Yes. Artifice is multiplayer: share a link and your party joins the same table from their own browsers. Everyone sees the same map, the same rolls, and the same narration as it happens.

Can I play on my own?

Yes. Because the Dungeon Master is always at the table, a solo session works the same way a full party does — you are never waiting on someone else to run the game for you.

The Dungeon Master
Does the AI just make the rules up as it goes?

No — and this is the part most AI tabletop tools get wrong. Artifice has a built-in deterministic rules engine that resolves dice, combat, and character mechanics. The model narrates and improvises the story; it does not adjudicate the maths. That is why you spend the session playing rather than correcting the Dungeon Master.

Will the Dungeon Master forget what happened last session?

The world keeps state between sessions. NPCs remember what you promised them, factions carry on with their own plans while you are away, and the town you saved is still standing when you come back to it.

What happens if I disagree with a ruling?

Mechanical outcomes come from the rules engine, so a disputed roll can be traced back to the dice and modifiers that produced it rather than argued with. Narrative calls are the Dungeon Master’s, and you can steer them the way you would steer a human DM — by telling it what your character does next.

Maps and content
What maps come with Artifice?

Artifice ships a library of hand-drafted battle map plates covering wilderness, canopy, ruins, dungeon, and urban terrain, with suggested level ranges for each. You can browse the whole shelf before making an account.

What grid do the maps use?

Every plate is drawn on a real 5ft square grid, so distances, movement, and spell ranges line up with the numbers on your character sheet instead of being eyeballed.

Can I bring my own maps?

Yes. You can upload your own plate and play on it. Set the grid so the squares read as 5ft and the rules engine measures across it exactly as it does the built-in maps.

Accounts and access
Do I need an account to look around?

No. The map library is open to anyone — browse the plates, read the terrain notes, and check the level ranges without signing up. You only need an account when you want to save a campaign.

What does Artifice cost?

Creating an account and starting a campaign is free.

Where are my campaigns kept?

Your campaigns, your party roster, and your journal all live on your account, and they are waiting exactly as you left them the next time you sit down — mid-encounter if that is where the session ended.

Still have a question

The blog goes deeper on how the rules engine and the persistent world actually work, and the map library is open without an account.
